Stefania’s Cucina Toscana
Danilo Bakery, now BAONECCI located in San Francisco's Little Italy neighborhood of North Beach for over 100 years, is owned and operated by a family from Altopascio (Lucca) Italy-- Walter Gambaccini, wife Stefania, and sons Elia and Fillipo.
Their native Altopascio is famous throughout Italy for its bread making culture and history, and they have chosen to continue this culture here in San Francisco in a neighborhood with deep Italian roots. Typical handmade products at Danilo Bakery include pane casalingo, grissini, biscotti, buccellato, panettone, and other dolci and delicacies.
With plenty of outdoor and indoor seating, melodious Italian conversation from customers of all ages combines with tantalizing aromas to create an unforgettable atmosphere. In order to further immerse you in an Italian experience, the television monitor carries Italian news, culture and soccer events, direct from Italy.
Danilo Bakery invites you to relax and enjoy a cappuccino or a bowl of homemade Zuppa di Farro (barley soup) every day. Their full array of pannini (sandwiches), light pasta dishes, thin crust pizza, assorted coffees, and baked goods showcase pure, genuine, real Tuscan fare, bringing you items not easily found outside of Tuscany itself. Even their foccasias are Tuscan style, very thin and crunchy with olive oil.
In addition to experiencing the authentic atmosphere and enjoying the culinary delights, a visit to Danilo is also a visit to old San Francisco. Already open for business before the San Francisco earthquake of 1906, the bakery’s ovens survived the earthquake, and are believed to be the oldest functioning bakery ovens in the United States.
Danilo Bakery: It’s the closest you’ll get to Tuscany right here in San Francisco.
